Former Sundowns midfielder Saavedra joins new club
Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Erwin Saavedra has joined a new club after parting ways with the Tshwane giants in the past January transfer window.
Saavedra was shown the exit door at Sundowns after struggling to make a meaningful impact at the club since his arrival in the Betway Premiership.
The Bolivian midfielder joined Masandawana in January 2022, however his stay with Sundowns was plagued by injuries amongst other things.
During his unsuccessful stay with Downs, Saavedra only managed to play 13 matches across all competitions without contributing any goal. The 28-year-old faced tough competition from Themba Zwane, Neo Maema, Marcelo Allende, Sphelele Mkhulise, and Tashreeq Matthews.
In the 2025 January transfer window, Sundowns cut ties with Saavedra to open up a foreign spot for Lucas Suárez, who joined the club on loan from Argentine side Club Atlético Talleres.
The Chloorkop-based outfit currently has Lucas Ribeiro, Arthur Sales, Matias Esquivel, Marcelo Allende, and Lucas Suárez occupying the five spots of registered foreigners.
ERWIN SAAVEDRA RETURNS TO CLUB BOLIVAR ON PERMANENT MOVE
In a bid to bring his career back on track, Saavedra has returned to his former team, Club Bolivar, on a free transfer.
The talented midfielder made over 100 appearances for Bolivar, scored 30 goals and provided 20 assists before completing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns.
The right-footed utility player was part of the huge transfer movements made by the Tshwane giants to build a highly competitive team.
Sundowns also parted ways with Lesiba Nku, Luvuyo Phewa, and Saavedra on a permanent basis while concluding loan moves for players such as Lebohang Maboe, Rushine De Reuck, and Thembinkosi Lorch.
On the other hand, the reigning league champions snapped up Jayden Adams, Keanu Cupido, and Lucas Suárez and brought back Matias Esquivel from his loan spell at Club Atlético Talleres.
