‘He should’ve gotten an offer abroad after AFCON’: Goss on Bafana star
SuperSport United goalkeeper Ricardo Goss has named the Bafana Bafana player he believes deserved a move abroad following their impressive performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON].
Held in Ivory Coast in January and February of last year, AFCON saw South Africa enjoy a memorable tournament, culminating in a bronze medal victory over DR Congo in the third-place playoff.
Goss was part of the goalkeeping department in the squad that travelled to the West African country. However, he didn’t feature with Ronwen Williams, remaining Hugo Broos’ first choice.
The SuperSport United goalie, Goss, believes Williams’ performances in the tournament should have earned him a switch abroad.
Bafana Bafana’s captain was instrumental in South Africa’s third-place finish, saving crucial penalties in shootouts against Cape Verde [quarter-final] and DR Congo [third-place play-off].
He achieved a double honour at the end of the tournament, receiving both the AFCON Golden Glove and a place in the Best XI.
RICARDO GOSS ON BAFANA STAR THAT SHOULD’VE MOVED TO EUROPE AFTER AFCON
“I think we have to wait another 100 years to have another goalkeeper that will be nominated for the Ballon d’Or,” said Goss during SuperSport’s media open day in Durban.
“Look, he had a fantastic AFCON. I think he should’ve gotten an offer abroad.
“There’s a lot you can learn from Ronza, the way he carries himself, the way he plays the game, so relaxed and so calm.
“For me, I feel like he should be overseas considering his performances at AFCON. But at least we’re still playing, meaning we have a chance to learn from him even when we play against him.
“I feel like the more you look at other goalkeepers, the more you can improve your game that, ‘This what I should do’.”
