Sifiso Myeni reflects on life after retiring from playing football

Sifiso Myeni, former Orlando Pirates attacker, has opened up about his life after retiring from professional football in September 2024, shortly after the start of the 2024/25 season.

During his career, the 36-year-old played for SA’s top-flight teams, such as Moroka Swallows, the now-defunct Bidvest Wits, and SuperSport United.

The former attacker once had a stint with non-defunct TS Sporting in the Motsepe Foundation Championship before he moved to Botswana Premier League side VTM FC, where he retired.

SMyeni’s career boasted over 280 appearances at the highest level, including prestigious competitions like the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. His on-field contributions included 32 goals and 43 assists. These performances earned him a league title with Wits and an MTN8 trophy during his time with SuperSport.

SIFISO MYENI IS COACHING A SAB HOLLYWOODBETS REGIONAL LEAGUE SIDE, NEW HOPE ACADEMY

“For the love of football, I am coaching a team called New Hope Academy. It’s doing well in the SAB [Hollywoodbets Regional League], a very talented team,” Myeni told FARPost.

“I’ve been a coach since 2012 at that time, I think I was at Orlando Pirates. It was a long time ago, and I never knew where I would end up. I always tell people that it’s not something that I started after retiring. Not maybe the team wanted my help because of my experience.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity New Hope Academy gave me because now the team is more recognised, not because of me, but the results. By coaching these boys, who are about 16 to 17 years old, I’m trying to give them the experience that I have, and I want to see most of them playing higher than I was.

Myeni further revealed that he plans to start his coaching badges this year. This will help him improve and learn new skills as a coach.

“I’m looking to start doing the coaching badges; I also want to learn; I’m someone who is looking to improve and study. So that’s something I will be working on this year. The game of football is all about learning for players and coaches.”
