The reason behind Cassius Mailula’s improved form at Wydad
Bafana Bafana attacker Cassius Mailula has revealed the reason behind his improved form in the colours of Moroccan giants Wydad AC.
Mailula reunited with his former coach at Mamelodi Sundowns, Rulani Mokwena, in August 2024, ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, on a season-long loan from MLS side Toronto FC. Wydad have the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.
The former Sundowns star, Mailula, had a slow start in Morocco. However, after he settled in, he started contributing goals to the club. Currently, the talented attacker has made 16 league appearances, scoring two goals and registering five assists.
For great performances on the pitch, the 23-year-old recently won the Wydad AC Player of the Month award for the month of January.
CASSIUS MAILULA CREDITS TEAMMATE MOHAMED RAYHI FOR HIS TURNAROUND FORM
Mailula has credited his Dutch teammate Mohamed Rayhi for his turnaround form in Morocco. Rayhi, who also plays as a winger, joined Wydad ahead of this season from Saudi First Division side Al-Jabalain FC. He has scored eight goals in 17 league matches this season.
“I think Rayhi helped me a lot when I came to the team. He always guides me with his experience. You can see it on the field of play; he contributes a lot to how we play,” said Mailula.
“He has helped me in difficult times, tells me to keep going and not to listen to the noise. When I came here, when I started, things were not going very well. Right now I’m happy things have changed, I’ve been putting in the hard work.
“Even on the pitch he listens to me, he guides me. He shows me videos of how I have improved and what to do better, so I’m really happy with the connection that we have. Off the pitch, he helps me with things that I want here in Morocco.”
