PSL postpone Nedbank Cup match, cites legal issues
The Premier Soccer League [PSL] has postponed Nedbank Cup fixture No. 21 [Royal AM/Milford FC versus Sekhukhune United] due to ongoing legal issues involving Thwihli Thwahla.
Citing recent legal developments, the PSL stated they had “no option” but to postpone the match to a date to be confirmed.
Royal AM were supposed to tackle Milford FC in the KZN Derby on January 27 at the Harry Gwala Stadium; Pietermaritzburg in the Nedbank Cup Last 32. However, the match was postponed as the PSL suspended Royal AM due to the club’s ongoing financial issues.
The PSL stated that the suspension would continue until further notice as Shauwn Mkhize’s club could not prove its financial stability or meet its commitments for the 2024/25 season.
Thwihli Thwahla have not played any matches since losing 3-1 to TS Galaxy on December 29 in the Betway Premiership.
The club has been under curatorship since January 2025 after the South African Revenue Service [SARS] obtained a preservation order over its assets, linked to debts of around R40 million owed by Royal AM president Shauwn Mkhize.
Mkhize sought to have the SARS curator provide a letter to the PSL confirming that Royal AM could fulfil their fixtures, but the North Gauteng High Court recently dismissed this application.
PSL APOLOGIZES FOR NEDBANK CUP POSTPONEMENT
In a statement on Tuesday, the PSL issued an apology for the postponement of the Nedbank Cup fixture.
“In light of the latest legal developments, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has no option but to postpone Nedbank Cup fixture No. 21 (Royal AM/Milford FC vs Sekhukhune United) to a date to be confirmed,” reads the statement.
“The PSL apologises for any inconvenience this may cause to the affected Member Clubs, PSL partners, and supporters.
“Further updates will be communicated as soon as the issues impacting the fixture have been clarified. The League will not make further comments on this matter until then.”
The winner of the suspended Nedbank Cup Last 32 match between Milford FC and Royal AM was slated to face 2023 finalist Sekhukhune United in the Round of 16. Babina Noko booked their last 16 spot with a 2-0 victory over Cape Town City FC.
As the Nedbank Cup round of 16 matches are set to commence on Wednesday, Royal AM’s future remains uncertain, with potential expulsion from the PSL looming if they fail to demonstrate adequate financial stability.
In light of this situation, it appears that Milford are likely to get a walkover in their Last 32 fixture against Royal AM and face Sekhukhune in the Round of 16.
