Gavin Hunt reacts to hard-fought victory against CT Spurs in the Nedbank Cup

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has reacted to his side’s hard-fought victory against Cape Town Spurs in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 on Wednesday evening at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

SuperSport came from a goal down to win 2-1 in extra time, becoming the first team to book a spot in the quarter-finals.

Motsepe Foundation Championship side – CT Spurs were led by assistant coach Vasilis Manousakis as head coach Ernst Middendorp was absent, serving a one-match suspension after four yellow cards.

The Urban Warriors opened the scoring as early as four minutes into the match courtesy of Therlo Moosa, who dribbled past the SuperSport defence.

In the 20th minute, attacker Christian Saile missed a golden chance to level matters. Moments later, Aphiwe Baliti’s freekick and Nyiko Mobbie’s header were saved by CT Spurs goalie Niel Boshoff.

Matsatsantsa finally got back in the game in the 36th minute. Centre-back Ime Okon pulled one back for the hosts to level matters. The Tshwane side got on the front foot as Lebohang Maboe scored in the 119th minute, netting his first SuperSport goal.

The outspoken coach gave credit to their opponents saying they got experienced players in their team. Some of the players in the Capetonians’ squad include Liam Bern, Luke Baartman, Moosa, Khaya Mfecane, Nazeer Allie and Mervin Boji.

“Good performance again, going a goal down and fighting… They got a lot of experience on their side, they got a lot of guys that played a lot of football, a lot of them played for me,” Hunt told SuperSportTV.

“They settled in and made it difficult for us. The turnover is obviously going to be important for them, and we handled it very well.

“There were one or two key moments that were scary, but we had a lot of opportunities around the box. We got to be a little bit better, but we got through; that’s the main thing, we got a little bit of momentum.”
