‘I’m going to face a different Makgopa’: Bonginkosi Makume
Baroka FC defender Bonginkosi Makume has given reasons why he reckons that he is going to face a different Evidence Makgopa when Bakgaga take on Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 at the weekend.
The duo played together at Limpopo club Baroa until Makgopa signed for the Buccaneers in June 2022 after impressing.
In the current campaign, Makgopa has played 24 matches across all competitions for the Soweto giants, contributing seven goals and an assist.
Since joining Pirates, Makgopa has become a national team player, given his stellar displays at the Sea Robbers, and he is one of Hugo Broos‘ trusted lieutenants at Bafana Bafana.Â
Baroka progressed to the Last 16 after defeating ABC Motsepe League side Umvoti 3-0, while Pirates beat Richards Bay FC 3-1.
BONGINKOSI MAKUME ON FACING EVIDENCE MAKGOPA IN NEDBANK CUP
Makume revealed that facing his former teammate, Makgopa, won’t be a walk in the park as he has grown as a player and has represented South Africa on football’s biggest stages.
He believes that Makgopa’s style of play has evolved significantly since his days in Baroka’s colours.
“I think he has grown as a footballer. His growth has been enormous. He has also played in AFCON, so his experience is going to come in handy,” said Makume.
“Playing against him, I think I’m going to face a different Makgopa because I believe he is a different player than he was when he was here. His game has evolved, and he has grown to become a better striker that he is right now.”
The Nedbank Cup game between Pirates and Baroka will take place at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday at 15:00.
Both teams will be gunning to advance to the tournament’s quarterfinals and be part of the draw that will be conducted on Monday, 17 February, at the SuperSport Studios.
