What Thabo September thinks about Chiefs’ new-look frontline
Chippa United coach Thabo September has shared his thoughts on Kaizer Chiefs’ new-look front four. September spoke to FARPost ahead of Saturday’s Last 16 Nedbank Cup clash between the Chilli Boys and Amakhosi at the FNB Stadium in Soweto.
With two new additions to their attacking line-up, Amakhosi now present a refreshed front four. Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has picked a completely new attacking quartet in the last two matches.
This change comes after the club signed Glody Lilepo, who has been deployed on the right wing, and Tashreeq Morris, who occupies the centre-forward position. Gaston Sirino started behind Morris, while Pule Mmodi firmly claimed the left-wing position.
Earlier in the season, Nabi relied on players like Wandile Duba on the wing, with either Ranga Chivaviro or Ashley Du Preez leading the attack and Mduduzi Shabalala filling the playmaker role in certain matches.
With Duba and Du Preez currently injured, Morris is poised to lead the line, and Lilepo’s two goals in his first two starts should secure his position on the right. Sirino’s strong performance against Stellies likely convinced the coach to start him in the playmaker role, with Shabalala providing capable backup.
THABO SEPTEMBER REVEALS HIS THOUGHTS ON CHIEFS’ NEW LOOK FRONT FOUR
Ahead of Saturday’s meeting at FNB [kick-off at 18:00], September identified an element he has observed in the new attack. “Chiefs is looking good,” September told FARPost.
“I think after the window, they look good. Their new signings have brought a lot of intensity into their game. High press, good press with Morris. [With] Lilepo, Mmodi and Gaston, if it’s Shabalala – that front four presses well.
“[Sibongiseni] Mthethwa and [Yusuf] Maart – Maart is suspended. [Thabo] Cele – they look good [in midfield]. They still have the same back four that played us.”
With Maart suspended, Mthethwa could play in midfield alongside Cele, with Sirino in front of them. The two clubs have met once this season in the Betway Premiership. Chiefs won 1-0, thanks to a Shabalala solo goal.
