What kind of job is Mngqithi waiting for? Mike Makaab explains
Renowned agent Mike Makaab has outlined the kind of job former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi is awaiting.
Mngqithi has not been in the dugout for two months now after he was shown the exit door by The Brazilians in December last year, with Miguel Cardoso taking over the head coaching position.
This followed an inconsistent start to the 2024/25 season after replacing Rulani Mokwena, who had parted ways with the club shortly before the campaign began.
Mngqithi’s departure from Masandawana marked an end to a more than a decade-long stay at the club. He arrived back in 2014 under the then-leadership of Pitso Mosimane.
He left the club along with goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson and assistant coach Romain Folz.
Makaab, who is the representative of Mngqithi, says they have been looking at opportunities on the table for the 53-year-old coach.
He emphasised that they don’t want to make “hasty” decisions, stating that the former Golden Arrows coach is seeking a position that offers a sustainable “football project” mirroring his successful 11-year tenure with Sundowns where he won several trophies both as an assistant and co-head coach.
Having previously endured a brief spell at Chippa United, where he was sacked just two games into the job before his Sundowns appointment, the Umzimkhulu-born coach is understandably prioritising stability in his next role.
MAKAAB ON MNGQITHI’S NEXT JOB – ‘IT’S NOT ABOUT BEING A COACH OF A FOOTBALL CLUB’
“We’re busy looking at opportunities; I’m meeting him [Mngqithi] soon,” said Makaab during an exclusive chat with FARPost.
“But we’re not going to be under any pressure to make hasty decisions. As I’ve said, and I’ll say it again, it’s got to be the right project for him.
“He’s that sort of coach; he’s professional in his approach, and for him, it’s not about being a coach of a football club, but it’s about being involved in a football project. He was at Sundowns for 11 years.”
Makaab recently told Soccer Laduma that the North African and Middle Eastern clubs have shown an interest in Mngqithi. Currently, Rulani Mokwena is representing the country in that region as the mentor of the Morrocan club Wydad Casablanca.
