Condolences pour in for former Mamelodi Sundowns defender
Mamelodi Sundowns have joined the South African football fraternity in sending their condolences following the death of their former defender Siyabonga Zulu.
The 31-year-old died in a motor vehicle accident while on his way back from a league match on Saturday. Zulu was part of the SAFA ABC Motsepe League side Phezulu FC.
The tragic accident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, on the P185 road between Secunda and Evander, Mpumalanga, claiming the lives of Zulu and his teammate Nhlanhla Masina. Another Phezulu FC player, known as Mosadi, is currently in critical condition and is receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

According to the reports in Mpumalanga, emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, where they discovered two vehicles that had reportedly been involved in a head-on collision.
“The chairman [Thlopane] and the Motsepe Family, the Board of Directors, Technical Team, Players, Management, Staff, Supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC & the entire Yellow Nation express their deepest condolences to the family and friends as we mourn the loss of former Mamelodi Sundowns player, Siyabonga Zulu and teammate at Phezulu FC – Nhlanhla Masina,” reads the statement from Sundowns.

“The Bafana Bafana international, Zulu, featured for some of the top flight teams, including Orlando Pirates, Chippa United, and Platinum Stars. Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones, families and everyone associated with Phezulu FC.”
Former Motsepe Foundation Championship side NB La Masia also sent out their condolences. Zulu played for the club during the 2023/24 season.
Phezulu FC, Zulu’s club, has yet to release an official statement regarding the tragic incident. Fans, teammates, and loved ones await further information as the club and authorities conduct their investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
