Nedbank Cup quarterfinals draw revealed
The PSL has revealed the highly-anticipated Nedbank Cup quarterfinal matchups following a thrilling round of 16 matches that culminated on Sunday, February 16, 2024, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next stage of the competition.
The Nedbank Cup quarterfinal draw took place on Monday, February 17th, at the SuperSport studios in Randburg and was broadcast live on SuperSport channel 202.
This tournament, known as the “Cup of Dreams”, saw the Round of 16 fixtures start on Wednesday, 12 February, when SuperSport United defeated Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town Spurs 2-1 after extra time at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
On Thursday, 13 February, Stellenbosch FC beat Polokwane City FC 2-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium, while on Friday, 14 February, Durban City FC put an end to TS Galaxy’s 13 games unbeaten run under coach Adnan Beganovic. The second-tier side shocked many as they beat Galaxy 2-1 after extra-time at Chatsworth Stadium.
On Saturday, 15 February, the defending champions Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Marumo Gallants also advanced to the tournament’s quarterfinals after defeating Baroka FC, Chippa United, and AmaZulu FC, respectively.
The Buccaneers got the better of Bakgaga 3-1 at Orlando Stadium, while Amakhosi secured a 3-0 win over the Chilli Boys at the FNB Stadium. On the other hand, Bahlabane ba Ntwa defeated Usuthu with a 1-0 slender win at home.
Meanwhile, on Sunday [16 February], Mamelodi Sundowns managed to beat ABC Motsepe League outfit Mpheni Home Defenders by 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
THE DRAW PROCEDURE BY THE PSL
The quarterfinal draw was unseeded, with all team names placed in a single pot. The first team drawn in each pairing became the home team, and the second was the away team.
This process was repeated until all fixtures were finalised as the ‘big three’ managed to avoid each other once again.
