Chiefs’ key duo in danger of missing Sundowns clash
Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi is in a predicament as two of his key men risk missing the crucial match against Mamelodi Sundowns on 1 March 2025.
Amakhosi play SuperSport United on Tuesday night at the iconic FNB Stadium in Soweto in a Betway Premiership match.
Ahead of that game, Chiefs have two key players sitting on three yellow cards. Should they pick another yellow, they would miss the match against Sundowns. This is because the next match against Royal AM has been called off, with the KZN side’s owner, Shauwn Mkhize, facing tax troubles.
Royal AM have played 11 matches this season, and the club’s fixtures have been postponed indefinitely. Thwihli Thwahla last played on December 29, 2024. This was when they suffered a 3-0 defeat against TS Galaxy at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
Fixtures against Chippa United, Orlando Pirates, Milford United [Nedbank Cup], Marumo Gallants, and Stellenbosch FC were all called off. The club’s latest court bid to force the PSL and SARS to allow them to return to play was dismissed.
The situation means Royal AM, after the SuperSport clash, the Soweto giants will face Sundowns in Pretoria.
WHICH KAIZER CHIEFS DUO IS IN THE DANGER OF MISSING SUNDOWNS CLASH?
Miguel Inacio and Thabo Cele are both sitting on three yellow cards going into the game against Matsatsantsa.
According to Article 54:1 of the NSL Handbook, “Any player who accumulates four cautions [yellow cards] for the first occasion in a season will be suspended from participation in the next one match to be played by his team in any competition under the auspices of the league.”
Cele has started the last three matches and has been cautioned during each. His fourth appearance was from the bench in the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.
Nabi will be hoping the duo does not pick any cautions against SuperSport. Chiefs are currently sixth, and a win against Gavin Hunt’s SuperSport would move them to fourth place.
