Ex-Pirates star on whether Makhaula deserves contract extension
Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Michael Morton has weighed in on whether midfield engine Makhehlene Makhaula deserves a contract extension at the club.
Makhaula joined Pirates from AmaZulu FC during the January transfer window of the 2022/23 season. His initial contract expired at the end of last season, but Pirates exercised a one-year extension.
His current contract with the Soweto giants is set to conclude in June 2025, when he will be 35 years old.
In the current Betway Premiership season, Makhaula has been a key player for the Sea Robbers, bossing the midfield through consistent performances. He has a few Man of the Match accolades to his name.
The midfielder known as ‘Cash’ has made 28 appearances in all competitions and scored one goal. He was part of the Pirates team that won the MTN8 title earlier in the season, in October 2024.
MAKHAULA’S AGE NO BARRIER, SAYS MORTON
At 35, Makhaula’s career is far from over, according to Morton, who believes the midfielder has ample seasons remaining and can significantly contribute to Pirates.
Morton argues he warrants a contract extension, particularly given his successful midfield partnership with Thalente Mbatha.
Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has also highlighted Makhaula’s evolution, noting his offensive contributions when the team is in possession.
“I think Makhehlene Makhaula has been a decent midfielder and in form for Pirates this season,” Morton told FARPost. “Hopefully, they can give him another season to showcase his talent, but to be honest, we all know what happens when you reach our age [35+].
“He’s showing that he still has many years left in him to continue playing high-quality football. I hope they can lock him in [give him an extension]. For me, Makhaula still has a bigger part to play in that Pirates team and he can help achieve their goals.”
