Highly contested SAFA elective congress collapses
The eagerly-awaited SAFA elective congress at the divided Capricorn region in Limpopo which was scheduled for Sunday collapsed before it could commence.
The outcome of the region will have a significant impact not only in the province but also at the 2026 SAFA elective congress. Current president Jacky Mogashoa is being challenged by his deputy, turned rival, Thomas Mulaudzi. The pair came into office in 2020 after defeating then-president and now PRO of Betway Premiership side Magesi FC Abel Rakoma.
The Region has been embroiled in a leadership tussle with some LFAs and clubs calling for Mogashoa to step down, while another group wants him to remain in charge. In 2023, local clubs in the region also organised a march to demand the removal of Mogashoa. He was accused among other things of mismanaging funds and poor administration, holding back development in the region.
WHY THE CAPRICORN REGION ELECTIVE CONGRESS WOULD ALSO IMPACT THE PROVINCE’S CHOICE FOR SAFA TOP POST
The SAFA Limpopo five regions are currently divided and there are reported fears that the outcomes of the Capricorn elections could result in regime change in the province, depending on the outcome. The province is currently led by NEC member and Waterberg president Jack Maluleka.
Maluleka together with Sekhukhune region president Magabolle Thokwane are close allies of president Danny Jordaan.
Vhembe region led by Jabulani Ndove and Mopani led by Vincent Ramphago are reportedly backing regime change. The two camps are reportedly banking on the outcomes of the region to take control to solidify their influence.
NEW DATES FOR CONGRESS AS THE BATTLE FOR TOP POST HEATS UP
The elective congress has been postponed to a later date after two Local Football Associations [LFA], Polokwane and Blouberg, were barred from participating. They allegedly failed to meet the required threshold.
There are allegations of individuals attempting to manipulate the process. Efforts to solicit a comment from SAFA Limpopo Secretary Refiloe Khoza were unsuccessful.
