Cardoso gives Williams injury update after Onyango’s red card
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has given an update on the injury of first-choice goalkeeper Ronwen Williams following Denis Onyango’s red card.
The Ugandan goalkeeper Onyango, who’s serving as an understudy to Williams, started in goal for Masandawana in their 3-1 Betway Premiership victory over Marumo Gallants on Wednesday night at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium.
This was his second match in a row having also featured in Sundowns’ previous game against Mpheni Home Defenders in the Nedbank Cup.
Onyango received his marching orders in the 90th minute after a second yellow card. This was the veteran goalie’s second red card this season, following his previous dismissal against Polokwane City FC in the MTN8.
He was initially booked for time-wasting late in the match. The second yellow and subsequent dismissal came when he fouled Gabadinho Mhango as the last defender, denying him what could have been a clear opportunity to score.
As a result, Onyango won’t be available for selection when Masandawana take on TS Galaxy in the league clash on Saturday, 22 February, at the Lucas Moripe Stadium at 5:45 PM.
However, Cardoso told the media after their clash against Gallants that he was confident Williams would recover from his minor injury to be available for their next fixture.
WILL RONWEN WILLIAMS BE AVAILABLE AGAINST TS GALAXY?
“I think the [red cards] affect [us] always because you never know what happens in the next game. So, it always affects [us],” said Cardoso.
“Ronwen [Williams] is our first goalkeeper, and Dennis has been on the [good] level because today [Wednesday], again, I remember he [made] a wonderful save from a header that could have been very dangerous.
“So, he has been on the [good] level. But I believe that Ronwen will have recovered from a small problem that he had today, and he will be able to go on goal.
“Otherwise we have Jody [February], we have Sanele [Tshabalala], we have Reyaad Pieterse. So, for sure, someone will stand up if we need some goalkeeper.”
