Why Serero fits CT City, not Chiefs or Pirates: Moeneeb Josephs explains
Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs explained why Thulani Serero is a perfect fit for Cape Town City FC and not suitable for Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates.
Josephs shared his views on Serero, who is back in the Betway Premiership after spending more than a decade playing overseas.
Serero left the PSL in 2011, moving from Ajax Cape Town to join Ajax Amsterdam, where he spent six years. ‘Cream’ as he’s popularly known, left Ajax Amsterdam to join another Dutch outfit Vitesse.
After the end of his stay in the Netherlands in 2020, The talented midfielder went on to spend the last five years in the UAE Pro League with Al Jazira and Khorfakkan.
And with Serero nearing the end of his career, the dribbling wizard has returned to the PSL and has seemingly joined Cape Town City FC after training with the club for the past few weeks, as confirmed by the club’s coach, Muhsin ErtuÄŸral.
The Citizens coach, ErtuÄŸral, has revealed that Serero returned to UAE to handle personal issues. ErtuÄŸral also stated that Serero is an option for CT City in future. However, he’ll miss their league match against Orlando Pirates this coming weekend.
WHAT MOENEEB JOSEPHS SAID ABOUT THULANI SERERO
Meanwhile, the former Pirates goalie Josephs says the 2011/12 PSL Footballer of the Season made the right choice to join CT City because he doesn’t have the vocal leadership skills to play for Chiefs or Pirates.
It was on the Soccer Beat podcast that Josephs shared his views, answering a presenter’s question about the value 34-year-old Serero could bring to teams such as Chiefs and Pirates.
“My opinion is that Serero is a great player and leader, but you get different types of leaders in the football industry. At Chiefs and Pirates, you need a vocal and strong leader,” Moeneeb said.
“We have a lot of quality players who lead by action on the pitch but because he’s a senior player, I don’t think he would add that value at Chiefs and Pirates. And to be at Cape Town City, that’s exactly what they need because they have a lot of youngsters.
“Thulani Serero is an exceptional player we know in South Africa but at teams like Chiefs or Pirates, we need that vocal leader, so I think he’ll be a waste in those teams.
