Dominic Isaacs pinpoints key issues in Chiefs’ defensive struggles
Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Dominic Isaacs has delivered a critical analysis of the club’s defensive woes, pinpointing specific issues contributing to their recent struggles.
The spotlight on Chiefs’ defensive vulnerabilities intensified after a damaging 4-1 loss to SuperSport United in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday night at FNB Stadium. This defeat underlines a season of defensive instability at the club.
With 23 goals conceded in 18Â games, they hold the second-worst defensive record in the league, a stark contrast to their current Nedbank Cup form, where they’ve yet to concede in two games. However, their Carling Knockout Cup exit, marked by four goals conceded in two matches, also paints a picture of a defence that struggles for consistency.
While the Glamour Boys’ defensive record has been poor, the squad boasts a wealth of talent in their backline. At centre-back, they have options like Inacio Miguel, Rushwin Dortley, Given Msimango, Zitha Kwinika, and Edmilson Dove.
Their full-back positions are equally well-stocked, with players such as Bradley Cross, Bongani Sam, Happy Mashiane, Reeve Frosler, and Dillan Solomons.
CHIEFS’ DEFENSIVE WOES: ISAACS BLAMES FORWARDS AND MIDFIELD
Isaacs has emphasised that defence isn’t solely the backline’s responsibility but starts with the forwards and midfielders. He questions Chiefs’ ball retention, recovery, and reaction after losing possession in the front and midfield, asking if the defence receives enough protection.
“That’s a million dollar question [Chiefs’ defensive woes] because everybody always has different opinions on what could be the problem,” Isaacs told FARPost.
“The defence doesn’t start at the back; it starts there up front, then comes down to the midfield. It’s how they lose the ball, how they recover and react after losing the ball. Is there enough protection for the defence from the front and in the midfield?
“I know the coach [Nasreddine Nabi] wants to play on the front foot, attacking football and all that. But there is a huge risk in playing that kind of football, and the players are not aware of this after losing the ball. That’s why Chiefs have been inconsistent at the back.”
