Rulani Mokwena: ‘This is the worst I’ve felt since I came to Morocco’

Wydad Casablanca head coach Rulani Mokwena has opened up about the worst feeling he has experienced since he arrived in the North African country – Morocco.

Mokwena linked with Wydad ahead of the 2024/25 Botola Pro 1 in July 2024. This was a few weeks after he parted ways with Betway Premiership giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

With Wydad, the SA-born mentor has been in charge of 22 league matches. The Red Castle are sitting second on the log standings with 40 points following 11 victories, seven draws and four defeats.

Wydad are 15 points behind runaway log leaders RS Berkane, who have collected 55 points from 22 matches.

RULANI MOKWENA UNHAPPY WITH HOW WYDAD PERFORMED AGAINST COD MEKNES

Mokwena says their 0-0 stalemate against COD Meknes on Saturday in the league at home was his worst in terms of performance since he moved to Morocco.

The mentor believes his side didn’t play their normal football. They failed to use their home advantage and secure the maximum points to make it six consecutive victories in the league.

“Football is a game where everything matters, everything matters, and if we play in our home stadium, we have a tactical game,” said Mokwena in his post-match press conference.

“I don’t think I was brought in here because I look good; I’m handsome; no. I think I was brought here because of the style of football I play.

“And if we can’t play that at our home stadium, it becomes very difficult. I’m a very unhappy coach, very unhappy coach today; this is the worst I’ve felt since I came to Morocco.”

Up next for Mokwena’s side is a top-of-the-table clash against log leaders RS Berkane away from home. Kickoff on Friday, 28 February, at Stade Municipal de Berkane is at 1 AM [SA time].

In the reverse fixture played in October 2024, Berkane won 1-0. A victory for Wydad on Friday will see them reduce the gap to 12 points.
