Top Cape Town City official’s resignation followed by arrest & bail release
A high-ranking official from Cape Town City FC is embroiled in a legal battle after the club filed fraud charges against him. His subsequent resignation from the club was followed by his arrest.
Grant Veitch, who had a long tenure as the head of development for the Betway Premiership side, stepped down at the end of January.
After securing a plum job at a top international agency, Veitch submitted his resignation on 31 January 2025. He began serving his notice at the start of February and was set to complete it at the end of the month before transitioning to the new job.
However, Veitch was arrested on Wednesday, 19 February 2025 and appeared in court on Friday.
Grant Veitch faces fraud charges related to the alleged theft of R32,000 from Cape Town City chairman John Comitis. He was granted bail of R5,000 without conditions. The state did not oppose bail.
The case has been postponed for further investigation and Veitch’s legal team is expected to submit representations for the withdrawal of charges at the next court date.
WHAT GRANT VEITCH’S LAWYER SAID
Veitch’s lawyer Bruce Hendricks told FARPost that his client “resigned, and that’s when all the trouble started”. “He was offered an improved salary to stay [at Cape Town City]. Veitch said he needed time to think about it. He then declined it,” Hendricks told FARPost.
He added that Veitch “fails to see why this is being done”. “The charge is fraud. It’s so poorly formulated that you struggle to understand when, where, how and what.
Given the fact that the initial amount the complainant mentioned was over R100 000, but on the charge sheet, it’s R32 000. I do think his employers set him up,” explained Hendricks.
He said his client was confident that the charges would be withdrawn.
“Grant currently is more concerned about his reputation because, you know, he didn’t do anything wrong. He’s involved in the communities and the sport…. He’s in a difficult position, but we’re confident that the charges will be withdrawn.
“Grant will answer to the charges, and he’s confident he will be acquitted. He will proceed with what he’s been doing in his career with managing young players and discovering talent. He has a love for the sport…”
GRANT VEITCH’S FAREWELL MESSAGE
Upon his bail release, Veitch announced his exit from the club via a message sent on one of the club’s WhatsApp groups.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t say goodbye in person. But I just wanted to take a moment to express how much I’ve loved working with these talented young men, it has been an absolute privilege, and I’m so proud of each and every one of them.
“To the parents, thank you for your support and trust. To the players, keep working hard, stay humble, and always believe in yourselves—I’ll be cheering you on from afar!
“Wishing you all the very best, both on and off the pitch.”
CT City boss, Comitis, said the matter was currently with the relevant authorities and could not comment. “Until that process has run its course, we have no comment,” Comitis told FARPost.
