Augustine Mulenga opens up on five-month injury lay-off
AmaZulu FC forward Augustine Mulenga has opened up on his lengthy injury lay-off, which has seen him only playing once this season.
Mulenga has been nursing a leg injury for the last five months, which he suffered in AmaZulu’s season opener against Chippa United in the Betway Premiership. In that match, he was introduced as a substitute in the second half.
He only lasted for 14 minutes after being introduced just after the hour mark before suffering a career-threatening injury.
As a result, the Zambian has agonisingly watched Usuthu turn the tables since the arrival of Arthur Zwane and Vusimuzi Vilakazi as co-coaches.
This also means Mulenga is yet to play under the co-coaches, who were appointed after the departure of Pablo Franco Martin. In his absence, they have banked on the likes of Etiosa Ighodaro and Elmo Kambindu in attack for goals.
WHAT THE AMAZULU FC FORWARD MULENGA SAID
The lengthy period off the field of play has been so painful to the 35-year-old, who described it as ‘the toughest phase in his career’. In an interview with FARPost, Mulenga said he never anticipated facing a challenge of this magnitude in his career.
“This has been the toughest period of my career as a footballer,” he said. “I never anticipated this, and it has been the toughest phase I have ever faced in my career. I only played one game, and the whole season, I have had to watch others playing.
“While my recovery journey has been smooth, I honestly have struggled with the fact that this injury disadvantaged me. The medical team has been excellent. Right now, I am doing light training, I am yet to start contact training with my teammates.
“We are still waiting for the doctors to give the go-ahead and maybe some scans to ascertain if I am fully recovered to start playing. I don’t think I will be able to play much this season. Maybe I will play in the last few games.
