Sifiso Myeni reveals key factors behind Pirates’ success under Riveiro
Former Orlando Pirates star Sifiso Myeni has shed light on the factors contributing to the club’s remarkable success under the leadership of coach Jose Riveiro.
Since his arrival at the helm in the 2022/23 PSL season, the Spanish tactician has transformed the Soweto giants into a formidable force, earning them the moniker ‘Cup Kings.’
Riveiro’s tenure has been characterized by an impressive trophy haul. In just two and a half seasons, he has steered Pirates to five titles, a testament to his tactical acumen and leadership.
The club has demonstrated its dominance in cup competitions, securing an unprecedented three consecutive MTN8 titles and back-to-back Nedbank Cup victories. This consistent success in knockout tournaments has solidified Pirates’ reputation as a team capable of delivering silverware.
The club’s pursuit of further glory continues in the current season, with Pirates advancing to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup, placing them firmly on track to defend their title. Beyond cup competitions, Riveiro has also revitalized Pirates’ league performance. The team is currently a strong contender in the Betway Premiership, occupying second place on the log with 36 points from 15 matches.
While they trail league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 12 points, they possess the advantage of three games in hand, offering a potential pathway to close the gap and challenge for the championship.
MYENI SAYS RIVEIRO HAS ALL THE PLAYERS HE NEEDS AT PIRATES
The retired winger, Myeni, believes Riveiro’s success at Pirates is a direct result of management support, which has ensured he has the players and equipment he needs.
“Credit must go to Dr Irvin Khoza and the management for bringing a coach that was unknown in SA. They were patient with him. The coach got all the players that he wanted for his project and he’s working with what he’s expecting. It’s difficult to find that in SA,” Myeni told FARPost.
“He is confident, the players are backing him, and results are on the field. I think he’s a coach who doesn’t tell a player to do anything.
“He’s not a coach where you have to play like a robot, do this, don’t do that. You can see the boys are enjoying themselves. It’s Pirates as a whole, how they play and how they express themselves on the pitch. For me, the coach is one of the best coaches in the country and in the history of Pirates.”
