Sundowns extend Betway Prem lead to 15 points in 6-goal showdown
In a pulsating six-goal spectacle at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, Mamelodi Sundowns emphatically asserted their dominance, extending their lead at the summit of the Betway Premiership to a commanding 15 points.
Sekhukhune United, despite a spirited effort, were ultimately unable to halt the relentless march of the Brazilians. This thrilling encounter, played out under the Polokwane lights on Wednesday, saw Sundowns seal a 4-2 win.
Sundowns’ victory wasn’t just another three points; it was a historic achievement. They’ve now become the fastest team ever in the PSL to reach 50 points in a season. They did it in just 19 games, beating their own previous records of 20 games, which they set in both the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.
And testament to their dominance, Miguel Cardoso’s troops have only tasted defeat once in their last 14 Betway Premiership games.
Adding to their form and fearsome reputation, Sundowns’ attacking prowess has been on full display. The Sekhukhune tie marked the third time in just their last six league games that they’ve unleashed a four-goal barrage, a chilling warning to Kaizer Chiefs ahead of their Saturday showdown at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
SUNDOWNS SURGE: 15-POINT LEAD, BUT PIRATES LURK
The Tshwane giants extended their lead at the top of the table to 15 points, but it’s crucial to note that second-placed Orlando Pirates have four games in hand. Meanwhile, Sekhukhune maintained their third position with 31 points.
Sundowns wasted no time in asserting their dominance against Babina Noko. In the 16th minute, Jayden Adams delivered a pinpoint diagonal pass, finding Thapelo Morena inside the box. Morena calmly controlled the ball and slotted it past Badra Ali Sangare.
Sekhukhune, however, responded strongly. In the 34th minute, Jody February parried Shaune Mogaila’s cross into the path of Katlego Otladisa, who reacted swiftly to level the score.
Undeterred, Sundowns quickly regained their lead. Four minutes later, in the 38th minute, Lucas Suarez rose highest to head home a perfectly executed corner from Marcelo Allende.
The Brazilians further solidified their advantage in the 56th minute. Lucas Ribeiro capitalised on a loose ball after Iqraam Rayners stumbled under pressure from Sangare.
Substitute Arthur Sales then added to Sundowns’ tally with a precise low shot from just outside the box, following a pass from Modiba.
Sekhukhune managed to pull one back in the 64th minute. A series of errors from the Sundowns defence allowed Keletso Makgalwa to capitalise, but it ultimately proved to be a consolation goal as Sundowns secured a 4-2 victory.
