Brian Baloyi on Chiefs’ January signing: ‘I’m still not convinced’

Kaizer Chiefs legend Brian Baloyi has cast a shadow of doubt over the club’s recent January signing, expressing that he remains ‘still not convinced’ by the player’s impact and qualities.

The Soweto giants’ performances under coach Nasreddine Nabi, who is in his first season at the club, have been a rollercoaster, marked by inconsistent results.

Currently sitting eighth in the Betway Premiership with 25 points, ‘Amakhosi’ are struggling to find consistency, evidenced by their seven wins, four draws, and seven defeats.

Their Carling Knockout Cup run ended in the quarterfinals, though they remain in contention in the Nedbank Cup. They missed out on the MTN8 after finishing ninth last season.

As Nabi aims to rebuild a trophy-contending squad, Chiefs brought in Thabo Cele, Makabi Lilepo, and Tashreeq Morris during the January transfer window.

While Lilepo has impressed with three goals in five appearances and Cele has been a regular presence, Morris, despite showing promise in his hold-up play and pressing, is yet to register a goal or assist in his four appearances.

Nabi is the man tasked with ending Chiefs’ trophy drought, which is approaching a decade, as they last won a title back in the 2014/15 season.

BRIAN BALOYI SAYS HE’S STILL NOT CONVINCED BY THE SIGNING OF TASHREEQ MORRIS

The legendary retired goalkeeper says he’s still not convinced by the signing of striker Tashreeq Morris. Baloyi expects to see more from the ex-SuperSport United attacker; that’s scoring goals as he’s a striker.

“I’m not sure about [Tashreeq] Morris, I’m still not convinced yet. Of all the [January] signings, Morris is the downfall,” Baloyi told FARPost.

“I haven’t seen enough that I can say he’s a good signing for Chiefs. But hopefully, he can turn around the corner and start scoring; at least he’s getting game time.

“So far, other new players have been adjusting well to the team. Cele is playing well in the midfield, showing signs that he’s a good signing for Chiefs.

“Lilepo, as well. In the attack, he brought something to the team. He’s scoring goals and creating opportunities for the team.”
