Ronwen Williams’ injury details revealed ahead of Chiefs clash

The nature of Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams’ injury has been revealed ahead of the crucial clash against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

The Bafana Bafana number one last featured for Masandawana a fortnight ago. This was in the 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy at the Mbombela Stadium on 11 February in the Betway Premiership

The Gqeberha-born goalie has since missed four matches for his club, with doubts lingering that he will be ready to return for the tie against Amakhosi at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

He was unavailable for clashes against Mpheni Home Defenders, Marumo Gallants, TS Galaxy [second leg Betway Premiership fixture] and Sekhukhune United.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has addressed the Sundowns goalkeeping issue, with second-choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango picking his second red card of the season.

The Uganda-born shot-stopper has missed the last two matches serving suspension, allowing Jody February to get a rare run of games. Cardoso admitted that the red cards affected them.

While a week ago he said Williams “will have recovered from a small problem that he had”, he gave a different update on Wednesday night after the game 4-2 win over Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership.

WHAT IS THE NATURE OF RONWEN WILLIAMS’ INJURY

“Regarding Ronwen [Williams], we don’t know when he will come back. We are hoping very quickly,” said Cardoso.

Indications are that Williams has a lower back problem, which has kept him out of action in recent games. Should the CAF Goalkeeper of the Year not be ready for Saturday, Cardoso could still turn to Jody February, who has guarded goals in recent games.

“Otherwise we have Jody,  we have Sanele [Tshabalala], we have Reyaad Pieterse. So, for sure, someone will stand up if we need some goalkeeper,” the Portuguese mentor said recently.
