The latest on Lebo Mothiba’s situation at Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has issued the latest update on the situation of Lebo Mothiba, who has been with the club since January.
Cardoso was addressing the media at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday after Sundowns’ 4-2 victory over Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership.
In the post-match press conference, the Downs gaffer was asked about Mothiba, who has been seen in the stands, at times, alongside Sundowns players, particularly during home games.
The Portuguese coach revealed that the Bafana Bafana striker is currently recovering from injury and is in the final stages of his rehabilitation. Cardoso expressed his belief that Mothiba will be a valuable asset to the club in the future, indicating that the former LOSC Lille striker is in his plans.
LEBO MOTHIBA, IN THE LAST STAGES OF HIS RECOVERY
“Lebo Mothiba is in the last stages of his recovery. So he is already integrated into the group, making some work with the group. Let’s hope he can help us in the future,” said Cardoso.
As previously reported by FARPost in January, the 28-year-old was offered a short-term contract by Sundowns.
This was after he had been without a club for more than six months after parting ways with the French side RC Strasbourg in 2024. He was, at some point, strongly linked with a move to Moroccan giants Wydad AC, but the deal fell through.
Cardoso told the media in January that Mothiba was the “medium or long-term plan” for his team.
The addition of Mothiba would bolster an already strong striking department, currently spearheaded by the in-form Peter Shalulile and Iqraam Rayners.
Rayners has recorded an impressive 16 goals and five assists in 26 appearances across all competitions, while Shalulile has contributed nine goals and two assists in 33 matches.
They will be looking to continue with their form when Sundowns host Kaizer Chiefs in a highly anticipated Betway Premiership fixture at Lucas Moripe Stadium this Saturday, 1 March, at 3:30 PM.
