Former defender outlines Chiefs’ path to decent season

A former Kaizer Chiefs defender has given his view on what the Soweto giants need to do to rescue their season and make it look respectable.

Over the years, ‘Amakhosi’, have struggled to replicate their past successes, where they consistently won trophies and finished among the top teams in the league. The last time they won a title was during the 2014/15 season under coach Stuart Baxter.

The 2023/24 campaign marked one of the worst in the history of ‘The Glamour Boys’. A dismal 10th-place finish in the league saw Chiefs fire Molefi Ntseki and bring in Cavin Johnson as interim coach.

But, true to form for the club in recent years, Johnson’s time was also brief, making him another coach to leave Chiefs within the last nine.

Ahead of the new season, Chiefs appointed Nasreddine Nabi as the new head coach as they look to rebuild and return to their former glory days.

Under the guidance of the Tunisian coach Nabi, Chiefs are still working to establish consistency in the current Betway Premiership season. After 18 league matches, they currently sit eighth on the table, with a record of seven victories, four draws, and seven defeats.

In the Carling Knockout Cup, ‘Amakhosi’ were eliminated in the quarterfinals by their rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns. However, they have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup.

Ex-Chiefs defender Dominic Isaacs believes that a top-three finish would make Chiefs’ campaign look decent. This will give the club any opportunity to be back on the continent for the first time since 2020/21.

In addition, the former centre-back says if Chiefs manages to go all the way in the Nedbank Cup that will be a cherry on top.

“I think they should be ok at number three,” Isaacs told FARPost. “Obviously, it’s not going to be an easy road, but I believe they got all it takes to reach there.

“Being up there will at least show that there is change and the team is heading towards a promising direction. By that, their season may look decent, considering that the coach is new and there are a lot of new players.

“Also, they got a chance in the Nedbank Cup, cup games are different to the league, who knows they might go all the way.”
