Ribeiro’s stunning goal helps Sundowns edge Chiefs

Lucas Ribeiro Costa scored a stunning goal to help Mamelodi Sundowns edge Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in the Betway Premiership on Saturday.

The in-form forward took his tally for the season to 12 goals, putting himself in an advantage to win the Golden Boot.

Sundowns hosted Amakhosi at a packed Lucas Moripe Stadium, looking to complete a double on Chiefs in the current season.

In the first round of the 2024/25 campaign, Sundowns defeated Chiefs 2-1 at FNB Stadium with goals Lucas Ribeiro and Iqraam Rayners while Ranga Chivaviro netted for the Soweto giants.

Before this match, Sundowns claimed a 4-2 win over Sekhukhune United, whereas Chiefs suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss against SuperSport United.

With Chiefs aiming to return to winning ways, they had a promising start to the match after putting Masandawana under immense pressure.

The Glamour Boys’ best chance of scoring fell for Mduduzi Shabalala early in the first half, but he ballooned his shot over the crossbar.

A few minutes later, the Chloorkop-based side broke the deadlock with a powerful shot from the left-footed attacker Lucas Ribeiro.

Sundowns went into the half-time break in the driving seat thanks to a stunning goal from the highly-rated star Ribeiro.

In the second-half, Sundowns grew in confidence and created more goal-scoring chances, however they could not convert their chances.

On the other hand, Chiefs were pushing to find an equalising goal, piling the pressure on Sundowns, but they stood resolute at the back.

The reigning Betway Premiership champions held onto their 1-0 lead to collect maximum points against Kaizer Chiefs.

Sundowns are 18 points clear at the top of the table from second-placed Orlando Pirates, who will face Marumo Gallants in the later kickoff on Saturday
