Manqoba Mngqithi joins new club

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has joined Golden Arrows after spending a few months on the sidelines.

Mngqithi has been with a club since parting ways with the Brazilians midway through the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season. The highly-rated coach took over the coaching job at the start of the season. However, he was fired after only six months.

The experienced coach is joining Arrows for the third stint after making his coaching breakthrough with the same club in 2007. He left the KZN-based side in 2010 to coach teams such as AmaZulu FC and Chippa United.

In 2012, Mngqithi went back to Arrows. But he joined Mamelodi Sundowns the following year to serve as the assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane.

During his time with the Tshwane giants, the 53-year-old won a handful of major trophies. These include the 2016 CAF Champions League title.

After Mosimane left the club in 2020, Mngqithi went on to serve as the co-coach alongside Rulani Mokwena between 2020 and 2022. The co-coaching arrangement was dismantled in 2022, with Mokwena taking over as the sole head coach.

Following Rulani Mokwena’s dismal in July 2024, Mngqithi took over Sundowns’ hot seat but only lasted six months in the position.

Having been unattached for quite some time, Manqoba Mngqithi has returned to Abafana Bes’thende with the aim of turning the fortunes for the club.

The KZN-born mentor has a good history with Arrows after winning the MTN8 trophy in 2009 against Ajax Cape Town, now known as Cape Town Spurs.

Mngqithi has a big task of turning the corner for Arrows, as they had a challenging start to the 2024/25 season.

The Mato Madlala-owned team is currently sitting 11th on the Betway Premiership log standings with 20 points after 16 matches. They won five league games, drew five and lost six times.
