53 and still going: Zim’s oldest PSL player not giving up
There is no stopping or giving up for Zimbabwe Castle League Premier Soccer League’s oldest player, Innocent Benza.
Benza, who turns 54 this year, owns Herentals College FC, which competes in the country’s elite league.
He also owns two other men’s football teams, Herentals Under-20 and Victoria Falls Herentals FC, competing in the ZIFA first division regions, the Northern Region and Southern Region.
In addition, Benza also owns Herentals Queens, the reigning champions in the Heart Women Premier Soccer League.
The 53-year-old is also a Member of Parliament [MP] for Mutasa Central constituency in the country’s Manicaland province.
Undoubtedly, he is one of the few football enthusiasts who has managed to keep the game afloat in Zimbabwe. He has been one of the key sponsors for The Warriors.
Having debuted in the elite league at the age of 46 in 2018, many thought he would have retired by now. But the unassuming striker has been punching above his weight, albeit with one goal under his belt.
He was on parade as Herentals College FC beat TelOne FC 2-1 at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday in Harare. That was their 2025 Castle League Premier Soccer League season opening match.
‘I DON’T KNOW MY LIMITATIONS’ SAYS CASTLE LAGER PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE OLDEST PLAYER
Benza says he is driven by the desire to see his son, Tinotenda Benza, break through to Europe. Tinotenda is currently the Herentals College FC captain. Additionally, the team is coached by his brother, Paul Benza.
“Besides my desire to see Tino growing to become a big player in the country and beyond, I am driven by mere passion and the love for the game,” Benza is quoted by Zimpapers Sports Hub.
“I do know my limitations, and I also know my strengths quite well. As long as my feet can carry my body, I will still be playing football because this is what I love. I know how to manage my energy levels.
