Club Brugge coach on Shandre Campbell’s progress

Head coach at Club Brugge Nicky Hayen has issued feedback on the progress of South African youngster Shandre Campbell after he was named in the squad for their UEFA Champions League clash against Aston Villa on Tuesday evening.

Campbell was an unused substitute during the 3-1 defeat to the English Premier League side at Jan Breydel Stadium. The 19-year-old was recently promoted to the first-team squad after an impressive display in the reserve side.

It was the former SuperSport United player’s first inclusion in the 22-man squad after missing out when they played Atalanta in the Playoffs.

HUGE PROGRESS FOR EX-SUPERSPORT UNITED STAR AT CLUB BRUGGE

Campbell has made just one appearance after his promotion to the senior team. The SA junior international played for five minutes when Brugge played to a 2-2 draw against Sint-Truiden in the league. He also made the match-day squad on two occasions but was an unused substitute.

His promotion to the senior team came after the six goals with an assist in 15 games with Club NXT [Brugge’s reserve team] in the second-tier league

He follows in the footsteps of Percy Tau, who was the last South African to play for Club Brugge during the 2019/20 season.

Meanwhile, Club Brugge will travel to Aston Villa on Wednesday next week for the return leg of the Champions League Last 16 tie.
