Why New Peter Mokaba is off limits for SuperSport-Pirates match
The Polokwane Municipality has explained why the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal match between SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates cannot take place at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, despite the venue being given the green light to host matches.
The stadium has returned to its usual state following grass rehabilitation after experiencing a pitch dilemma during a music concert in December 2024. The pitch had sustained significant damage due to inadequate protection during the festival.
This resulted in several Betway Premiership games being moved to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, which holds 15,000 spectators.
Matsatsantsa will welcome the Buccaneers at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, 8 March. The Nedbank quarterfinal showdown between the two teams will kick off at 15:00.
SuperSport usually use Lucas Moripe Stadium as their home ground, but the stadium will be hosting the game between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United, while Loftus Versfeld Stadium is still undergoing pitch maintenance.
WHY THE SUPERSPORT UNITED AND ORLANDO PIRATES GAME WILL BE PLAYED AT OLD PETER MOKABA STADIUM
The Polokwane Municipality indicated that this is a PSL cup match and is not included in the agreement they have with clubs to host certain home league matches at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
In recent years, SuperSport have been using the New Peter Mokaba Stadium as their alternative home ground.
“Look, remember, SuperSport and Pirates match is a PSL cup game. So, it’s not necessarily part of the arrangement that we have with clubs,” Polokwane Municipality sport and recreation manager Mantlako Sebaka told FARPost.
“However, we have got all clear [given the greenlight] to play any matches here from now on even before the Bafana Bafana match.
“But having said that, the facility [the New Peter Mokaba Stadium] is ready and will see more activities taking place, from the 10th of March and the game between SuperSport and Pirates is taking place on Saturday, 8 March 2025.”
