Ndumiso Mabena joins new PSL club
Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Leruma United has given former Orlando Pirates striker Ndumiso Mabena another lifeline to revive his football career.
The veteran striker has been without a club after cutting ties with Betway Premiership club Polokwane City FC in July 2024. He had signed for the Limpopo club in September 2023 following his departure from Orlando Pirates, where he struggled for game time in his second stint with the team.
The experienced frontman joins Leruma as a free agent, with the club looking to strengthen its squad in order to survive the relegation.
Mabena comes highly recommended, as he also represented teams such as Winners Park, Platinum Stars, Royal AM and Bloemfontein Celtic.
In the January transfer window, the club also roped in another experienced striker, Naeem Amoojee, who turned out for Moroka Swallows, Baroka FC, TTM, and African All Stars.
This is Leruma’s first season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship after securing Marumo Gallants’ PSL status. Gallants returned to the Betway Premiership following their successful deal in purchasing Moroka Swallows’ status.
LERUMA UNITED’S POSITION ON THE MOTSEPE FOUNDATION CHAMPIONSHIP LOG STANDINGS
As things stand, Leruma are languishing at the basement of the league table with 17 points from 20 outings. They are just two points behind 14th-placed Cape Town Spurs.
As a result, the team will fight hard to change their misfortunes, with nine games left to play in the second-tier league before the 2024/25 season could come to an end.
Leruma’s next league match will be against Highbury FC away from home on Tuesday, 11 March. The game is set to start at 15:30 at Gelvandale Stadium.
Mabena is most likely to make his debut against the Eastern Cape club, who are also in the first season in the SA second tier after winning the 2024 SAFA ABC Motsepe National Playoffs.
