2 reasons why quarterfinal postponement is a blessing for Sekhukhune United
The postponement of the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United, originally set for Saturday at Lucas Moripe Stadium, may be a blessing in disguise for Babina Noko.
This fixture was one of three Nedbank Cup quarterfinals scheduled for Saturday. The two other clashes involve SuperSport United vs Orlando Pirates at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane and Stellenbosch FC vs Kaizer Chiefs at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The match between Sundowns and Sekhukhune was called off after a double-booking was discovered at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Although the PSL had exclusive venue rights obtained through a previous agreement, the stadium also accepted a booking for a FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifier, which is set to kick off roughly six hours before the Nedbank Cup.
In a statement issued on Friday evening, the PSL revealed that it immediately contested the stadium management’s actions, demanding assurance that the original contractual agreement would be upheld. However, no such confirmation was forthcoming.
The PSL stressed the logistical impossibility of hosting two high-profile matches within the constrained timeframe, specifically addressing team access and compliance with Nedbank Cup regulations.
Furthermore, the PSL deemed proceeding with the match “reckless,” citing a direct and unacceptable risk to the safety and security of all participants and attendees.
HOW IS THE POSTPONEMENT A BLESSING FOR SEKHUKHUNE UNITED
However, the news may have been a boost for Babina Noko. Firstly, the club announced the exit of their coach, Lehlohonolo Seema, 48 hours before the match. Kaitano Tembo and Paulus Masehe were appointed on an interim basis.
Eric Tinkler is certainly set to take over the hot seat at the Limpopo club. But the move would not have happened in time for him to be available for that game. Indications are that Tinkler, who has been out of a job since December after leaving Cape Town City FC, will resume his duties next week. A new date for this clash would mean Tinkler will be available.
Secondly, Keletso Makgalwa, who has been a revelation for Sekhukhune and Katlego Otladisa, would have had to pass late fitness tests. The postponement also means the two will be available for the clash.
Sekhukhune and Sundowns clashed two weeks ago, with Masandawana emerging 4-2 victors in that pulsating encounter. This time around, the Limpopo side will be hoping to upset the Tshwane giants to book a place in the competition’s semi-final.
