Former Orlando Pirates star Munetsi off the mark in the EPL

Ex-Orlando Pirates star Marshall Munetsi scored his first Premier League goal as his stock continues to rise at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 28-year-old is proving to be worth a gamble for Wolverhampton Wanderers coach Vitor Pereira. The latter has been audacious to fix the energetic Zimbabwean as a forward, away from his usual midfield role.

While he failed to hit the target in his first five matches, he finally got it right against Everton on Saturday night at the Molineux Stadium.

Munetsi equalised for Wolves in the 40th minute after Everton opened the scoresheet seven minutes earlier via Jack Harrison. Despite scoring their goal, Munetsi was withdrawn at the break and was replaced by Pablo Sarabia.

However, his goal was not enough to earn Wolves maximum points as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home. They remain in the murky waters of relegation, in 17th position, with 23 points from 28 games.

Wolves secured the services of the former Orlando Pirates star on a three-and-a-half-year contract. He joined the England outfit on the January transfer window deadline day from French outfit Stade Reims.

The Premier League side paid over R400 million [€20 million] for the Zimbabwean international. Additionally, he joined the growing list of Zimbabweans plying their trade in England.

At Wolves, he joined Tawanda Chirewa, who is also in the club’s ranks, albeit on loan at League One side Huddersfield Town. Striker Leon Chiwome, who carries Zimbabwean heritage, is also part of the team

Munetsi’s rise in stock continues, moreso after a good spell in France, where he played since July 2019. That was after his spell at Pirates and Baroka FC.

The hard-working midfielder established himself as Reims’ mainstay in the last five years. The Harare-born star made 159 appearances for the French side in all competitions. He scored 21 times and registered 14 assists.
