Jose Riveiro points out Pirates’ ‘wrongs’ after Nedbank Cup win

Despite securing a spot in the Nedbank Cup semifinals, Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has made an honest admission on some of the ‘wrongs’ his side committed on Saturday.

The Buccaneers won 5-4 during a tense penalty shootout against SuperSport United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

They surrendered the lead twice in a match that had to go to extra-time. One of the goals conceded was in the 92nd minute. Riveiro admitted that their positioning was questionable, leading to the equaliser by SuperSport.

“We were wrong in our positioning in the last minutes. We allowed them to have contact on the ball,” said Riveiro.

WHAT WRONGS DID ORLANDO PIRATES COMMIT DURING THE WIN AGAINST SUPERSPORT UNITED?

‘Players like Bradley [Grobler], like [Vincent] Pule and Christian [Saile] in the areas close to our box. In the end, they punished us,” he said.

JOSE RIVEIRO PLEASED TO BE IN THE SEMIFINALS, REGARDLESS OF NEEDING PENALTIES

“[Penalties] is one of the possibilities in a knockout game. There are only two possible results in these types of games. So if you can not make it in the 120 minutes, you have to go to the penalties and do your best. We did a good job in that space. I am happy to be in the semifinals.”

Riveiro was full of praise for goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who made two saves during the penalty shootout.

“It’s his role in the penalty shootout. He has to stay there between the posts and try to catch at least one more than the opponent,” he said.

“He has been doing well in that particular scenario in recent occasions where we had to go to penalties. Today [Saturday], again, he did an excellent job together with the analysis department, the goalkeeper coach [Tyron Damons] and everybody that is in that space.”
