Jomo Sono reiterates stance on buying PSL status

Jomo Cosmos head coach and owner Jomo Sono has reiterated his stance on the possibility of buying a PSL status in the future.

Ezenkosi are currently participating in the SA’s third division – ABC Motsepe League after being relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Cosmos have been trying to wrestle their way back into the professional ranks after last playing in the SA’s top-flight in the 2015/16 season.

In the ABC Motsepe, Cosmos have found the going tough as they are in their third season in the amateur league. Cosmos have a rich history in South African football, producing some of the talented footballers.

Cosmos, under the leadership of Jomo Sono, have produced players such as Morgan Gould, Thabang Monare, Linda Mntambo, Dikgang Mabalane, and Anthony Laffor, amongst many others.

WHAT DID JOMO SONO SAY ABOUT BUYING PSL STATUS

With Cosmos seemingly struggling to get back to the elite league, Sono has in the past revealed that buying a status is one of the options he would never exercise.

The Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana legend has once again stressed the disadvantages of purchasing a status. In recent times, iconic clubs like Bidvest Wits, Bloemfontein Celtic, Free State Stars and Moroka Swallows sold their status. Swallows sold their top-flight status at the start of the current campaign to Marumo Gallants.

Speaking in an interview with FARPost, Jomo said it’s not worth it to buy a status for R80 million because you can be in the relegation fight shortly after.

“No, I would never buy a status because you buy a status with R80 million only to get relegated, what are you going to do?” Sono rhetorically asked.

“And you know that in the PSL, you survive with the grant and you know that not every team has a sponsor which is bad. So I will never buy a status.”

In the ABC Motsepe League this season, Jomo Cosmos are occupying the 11th spot on the league table with 28 points after 23 matches.

Cosmos are out of the race to win the league with Highlands Park, African All Stars, Gomora United, and La Masia fighting for a place in the national playoffs to gain promotion to the second division.
