Has the PSL title race been decided? Sundowns’ Cardoso gives verdict
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has given his verdict on the title race, with his side sitting comfortably at the summit of the Betway Premiership table.
The Brazilians extended their lead to a massive 18 points on Tuesday night after beating AmaZulu FC 2-0 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.Â
Their closest challengers, Orlando Pirates, who have four games in hand, stumbled, drawing 0-0 with Stellenbosch FC away from home at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.Â
The Buccaneers now sit on 40 points from 18 games, while Masandawana have racked up 58 in 22 outings.
Even if the Sea Robbers win all their games in hand, they would still trail the Tshwane giants by six points, with Sundowns chasing a record eighth successive league title.
Despite the comfortable cushion, Sundowns gaffer Cardoso – who boasts an impressive record of 12 wins in 14 league games since his appointment in December last year – insisted the title race was “still going to be tough,” emphasising there’s “still a long way to go.”
CARDOSO BELIEVES THERE’S A LONG WAY TO GO BEFORE DOWNS SEAL THE TITLE
“I don’t take nothing for granted in life,” said Cardoso. “I have a big respect for myself and for football. This championship will be tough because no one will give up from any side.
“And the advantage we have, we need to [protect] it as much as possible, and we need to be as strong as possible. We need to prepare ourselves very well. Any team can take points from any team in this championship if you don’t respect the game itself and give your best.
“So, there’s still a long way to go. Let’s focus on the next match after that one [AmaZulu]. There will always be another one to prepare for, and that’s how I see things until the end.”
Interestingly, in what could be a league title decider, Sundowns are scheduled to visit Ezimnyama Ngenkani in their upcoming fixture.
The highly anticipated match is set to take place on Sunday, 16 March at the FNB Stadium in Soweto, with kickoff at 3:30 PM.
