Musona bounces back, headlines Zim WC qualifiers squad
Almost three years after quitting international football, former Kaizer Chiefs striker Knowledge Musona has rescinded his decision.
Musona initially retired in May 2022 after making three consecutive AFCON appearances. He featured in the 2017, 2019 and 2021 editions.
The 34-year-old follows Khama Billiat who came out of retirement last year following his return to Zimbabwe’s PSL.
Prior to his initial decision, Musona had featured 51 times for Zimbabwe and scored 24 goals in all competitions. That was after making his debut for Zimbabwe in 2010, at a time he was at the climax of his career.
At club level, the striker has featured for PSL heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs and Bundesliga side 1899 Hoffenheim. He also turned out for Anderlecht in Belgium before opting to go to Saudi Arabia. Currently he is in the books of Al-Okhdood Club in the Saudi Pro League.
KNOWLEDGE MUSONA SET TO REUNITE WITH KHAMA BILLIAT
He returns to the Zimbabwe national team fold at a time they are seeking to turn around their fortunes in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His return means he will reunite with Billiat who he formed a formidable combination with for over six years.
In Group C, Rwanda, Bafana Bafana and Benin are tied on seven points apiece. Lesotho have five points followed by Nigeria who have three points. Zimbabwe anchor the group with two points.
Musona and Billiat are both products of the Aces Youth Soccer Academy in Harare and were the driving force in what is, statistically, Zimbabwe’s most successful era. Additionally, he will also play with his young brother Walter Musona. The latter has been getting crucial goals for the nation in both AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.
There are chances, Musona will get his role back as the team’s captain, a title that was held by Luton Town midfielder Marvellous Nakamba. Former Orlando Pirates star Marshall Munetsi has been the vice-captain.
The Warriors face Benin and Nigeria on the 20th and 25th of March respectively. They will also host Benin at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban – SA as they do not have a CAF approved stadium.
Musona headlines a cast of stars that include Divine Lunga of Mamelodi Sundowns and Terrence Dzvukamanja of SuperSport United. In addition, Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi has been included despite injury concerns.
Former SuperSport United striker Prince Dube who has been making waves at Young Africans retained his place in the team. Fresh from his move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Munetsi will be expected to make impact as they face two tricky matches.
