‘I hope he learnt’ – Hugo Broos on Jayden Adams Bafana return

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is hoping the past incident involving Jayden Adams will serve as a lesson after the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder’s return to the national team.

Adams was included in the Bafana final 23-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin.

The 23-year-old was booted out of the squad before the 2025 AFCON qualifiers match against Congo last year for disciplinary reasons. The former Stellenbosch player had not been called up by Broos ever since.

Adams will now be part of the squad that will take on Lesotho at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday, 21 March, before an away encounter against Benin. The attacker has settled well at his new side, Sundowns, since joining during the January transfer window period.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is hoping the past incident involving Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams will serve as a lesson after his return to the national team.

“I think everybody knows why Jayden was not with us anymore. I hope he learnt a lot about what he did,” said Broos after announcing his squad at the SABC studios in Johannesburg.

“That’s what I wanted to achieve. He can’t do what he did, and you can’t do that when you have a call-up to the national team.

HUGO BROOS HAPPY WITH MAMELODI SUNDOWNS MIDFIELDER’S FORM

“You must do everything to come to the team. I just wanted to show Jayden that it was not the right attitude to have. But with his qualities and Jayden as a player, I like him. He is a good player. So, he is playing well with Sundowns. So I didn’t see any reason why I shouldn’t call him again.”

“For me, I was afraid that he would not play so much. You know Sundowns have a lot of players. They also play a lot of games. But yeah, I am very happy [he is playing regularly].”

Adams, who joined the Tshwane giants during the PSL January transfer window has already played 12 games for the club, scoring two goals and providing an assist.
