Son to three-time Ballon d’Or nominee on Shandre Campbell’s future

A son of a three-time Ballon d’Or nominee recently discussed the future of Club Brugge’s South African winger, Shandre Campbell.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos addressed journalists on Thursday, sharing his conversation with Guilian Preud’homme, the son of 1994 FIFA World Cup Yashin Award winner Michel Preud’homme. Guilian, whose father is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, is currently the CEO of Club Brugge.

The former SuperSport United winger – Campbell has made significant progress since moving to Belgium at the beginning of the season. The South African youth international joined Brugge in July 2024 and has scored six goals while providing one assist in 13 appearances for the club’s feeder team, Club NXT, in the Challenger Pro League.

His transfer followed an impressive season in the PSL, where he was a nominee for the DStv Premiership Young Player of the Year and the Nedbank Player of the Year. The teenage sensation has continued to impress, being included in Brugge’s UEFA Champions League travelling squads.

“This is someone. If I am thinking about young players and the list we have, I am looking at the future of Bafana Bafana,” Broos said. “This is someone who’s on the list. I hear very, very, very positive things about Campbell in Brugge.

“In November, I was on the game in Brugge, and the [guy] responsible for youth, the son of Michel Preud’homme [Guilian], is head of youth in Brugge. He came to me, and he was very happy. Guilian said Campbell is close to the first team and has already been on the bench a few times.

“He came in a few times for 10 minutes or so [as a substitute]. They are still [seeing him] little by little. They are bringing him. And that’s why he chose a good team. They know how to bring [develop] a player.

“They know how to give him the right formation before joining the first team. And I think maybe already at the end of the season, but certainly next season, he will be someone who will get a chance in Brugge. And then there, with these capacities and qualities, I think we can again have a good, young, talented player.”

After making his mark in the DDC, the 19-year-old attacker was promoted to the Matsatsantsa senior team in July 2023. His goal-scoring prowess propelled Matsatsantsa to their first-ever DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] league trophy in the 2022/23 season, earning him the club’s DDC Player of the Year award.

He debuted for SuperSport when they defeated Richards Bay FC 2-0 in a league tie in August 2023 at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium. He provided two assists and played 24 games, scoring five goals and six assists in the PSL.
