The impact of Cristiano Ronaldo’s words on Shalulile’s persistent achievements
Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile has spoken about the influence of renowned football star Cristiano Ronaldo’s words on his persistent achievements.
Namibian forward Shalulile reached a century of goals for the Brazilians, scoring one of their two goals in a 2-0 Betway Premiership victory over AmaZulu FC on Tuesday, 11 March 2025.
According to OptaJabu, this achievement makes him only the second player in PSL history to score 100 goals for a single club, after Daniel Mudau, who holds the record with 110 for the Tshwane giants.
The 31-year-old is also nearing Siyabonga Nomvethe’s PSL goal-scoring record of 129, currently having scored 127 goals in the top flight.
Reacting to reaching this milestone in an interview with Sundowns’ media, Shalulile said, “Well, I could not do this without my teammates and the coaches that I’ve worked with at Sundowns and, most importantly, God.”
“It’s been a hard journey towards those 100 goals. Sleepless nights, hard work and dedication, coming to work knowing that it’s not easy but having that goal that it’s possible. I’m happy, and I just wish for many more to come.”
SHALULILE’S SUCCESS STORY POWERED BY CRISTIANO RONALDO’S WORDS
Adopting a habit of doing extra work even on his days off, Shalulile credited former Real Madrid star Ronaldo, who famously stated that spending more time on the field is key to becoming a better player.
“Well, it’s not like I do extra work when I’m [struggling] to score; it’s because I’ve started this long time, and I made myself a promise that I’ll want to work extra every time I get an opportunity to do that.
“So for me, it’s just to come and sharpen my skills. I also look up to Cristiano Ronaldo because he says, ‘Every day you spend time on the field, it makes you a better player’.
“Sharpening your skills is what gets you to score more because you do it repeatedly; you do it every day constantly. When it comes to the field, it’s more easier because then the brain reminds the legs that this is what we trained on, and then you just execute and score goals.”
