Zwane on what makes ex-Sundowns coach Robinson ‘huge plus’ to AmaZulu
AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane has explained what makes the club’s new goalkeeper coach, Wendell Robinson, a “huge plus” to his technical team.
Robinson had been without a club since his departure from Mamelodi Sundowns in December 2024. He was released alongside head coach Manqoba Mngqithi and assistant coach Romain Folz.
During his time with Masandawana, the Pietermaritzburg-born Robinson held a dual role, serving as both the goalkeepers’ mentor and an assistant coach under both Rulani Mokwena and Mngqithi.
He had been at Sundowns since 2012, and his departure led to Kennedy Mweene taking over the goalkeeper coach role under Miguel Cardoso, who succeeded Mngqithi.
This week, Robinson joined Usuthu as their new goalkeeper coach. His arrival followed the resignation of Aubrey Vilakazi, who cited personal reasons for leaving the club.
Vilakazi had been promoted to the first-team goalkeeper coach role at the beginning of the season, having previously served in the same capacity within the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] team.
Zwane expressed his delight at the “vast experience” Robinson brings to AmaZulu, especially considering their recent struggles in the goalkeeping department. He also emphasised that the former Bidvest Wits goalkeeper possesses a winning mentality, highlighting that someone like him was much-needed in the team.

“There’s no doubt that bringing coach Wendell [will boost us]. He is obviously a huge plus in the technical team,“ said Zwane.
“He has vast experience; he’s been in the game and has achieved a lot. We needed someone like him, obviously. So, he’s one person who likes to win; he’s used to winning.
“You can see he wants to hit the ground running. So, I think we have very, very good members of the technical team that will change things for the better.”
This is the second technical team change for AmaZulu in 2025. Last month, the club parted ways with Vusumuzi Vilakazi, who was a co-coach with Zwane. Subsequently, ‘10111’ took over as sole head coach.
