‘Even Alex Ferguson will tell you’ – Da Gama after another win

Magesi FC coach Owen Da Gama has detailed what has contributed to their winning run after his troops moved out of the relegation zone following their 1-0 win over Golden Arrows on Saturday afternoon.

The Betway Premiership showdown between Magesi and Arrows took place at Seshego Stadium in Polokwane.

Dikwena Tsa Meetse secured back-to-back league victories with a 1-0 result against Richards Bay FC and Arrows, respectively, climbing to 11th place on the log standings with 23 points after 23 games.

As a result, Da Gama and his men were in a celebratory spirit and felt relieved to have climbed up the log standings.

After the game, while addressing the media, Da Gama quoted former Manchester United mentor Sir Alex Ferguson, who worked at the Red Devils from 1986 to 2013.

WHAT OWEN DA GAMA SAID ABOUT ALEX FERGUSON

Da Gama brought up one of Ferguson’s famous quotes: “Attack wins you games; defence wins you titles,” attesting to what has worked for his team lately. The ‘Rubber Doll’, as he’s affectionately known, believes that his defence has been phenomenal and key to winning their games.

To demonstrate that Ferguson’s approach was effective for him, during his 26 years as coach at Man United, he succeeded in securing numerous trophies. This encompasses 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, one European Cup championship, and two Champions League titles.

“Look, I think the most important thing is, when you try to get a team right, even Alex Ferguson will tell you, or the best coaches in the world will tell you if you defend well, you have a chance to win,” said Da Gama.

“We have been working very resolutely on our defence. However, we have not been consistent in that, but now, once we have consistency without injuries and with injuries, you have to change. Remember when we beat SuperSport? Samuel Darpoh was playing as a central defender because Lehlogonolo Mokone was not there. But he still managed to come out and get the result.

“The defending was absolutely fantastic, and I liked the defending against all the other clubs we have won. We have always said that if we defend well, we have a chance with any team.”

Magesi’s next league fixture will be against Stellenbosch FC on Saturday, 29 March 2025. The game will take place at Seshego Stadium at 17:45.
