Kaizer Chiefs star called up for World Cup qualifiers

For the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Kaizer Chiefs will have only one player on international duty, and no players from the club have been selected for the Bafana Bafana squad.

The international break is going to take place from 17 to 25 March with countries battling for spots in the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be held in the USA, Mexico and Canada next year.

Bafana will face off against Lesotho on Friday, 21 March, at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane before they take on Benin on Tuesday, 25 March, at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Ivory Coast.

While two of the traditional big three in SA  Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have a significant presence in Hugo Broos’ team with nine and five players, respectively, no players from Chiefs were selected.

NTWARI TO REPRESENT CHIEFS IN WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

The only player from Chiefs set to participate in the World Cup qualifying matches is Fiacre Ntwari, who has received a call-up from the Rwandan national team.

Amavubi are in the same group as Bafana. They are currently at the summit of the table, level on seven points with both South Africa and Benin but ahead due to a superior goal difference. The above-mentioned three teams have all secured two wins, one draw, and one loss in their four matches.

Rwanda will take on Nigeria on Friday, 21 March, before they face Lesotho on Tuesday, 25 March.

Despite facing a challenging period of limited playing time with Amakhosi for the last four months, Ntwari is relied upon by Rwanda as their first-choice goalkeeper and is expected to start both crucial World Cup qualifying matches.

Ntwari’s last appearance for Chiefs was in their 4-0 Carling Knockout Cup defeat against Sundowns in November 2024, after which Bruce Bvuma reclaimed the number one spot.

Ntwari joined the Soweto giants at the start of the season from TS Galaxy, following Itumeleng Khune’s departure.
