Cape Town City welcome ex-Pirates coach in new coaching setup

A few hours after firing Muhsin Ertugral, Cape Town City FC have welcomed an ex-Orlando Pirates head coach in their new coaching setup.

CT City confirmed the exit of Ertugral on Monday, 17 March 2025, following an underwhelming run of form in the Betway Premiership.

The 65-year-old mentor is leaving City after taking over the coaching role on an interim basis in January of this year. Ertugral initially joined CT City as the technical director, but he has since been shown the exit door before serving in the TD role.

Ertugral’s firing came after Cape Town City lost 1-0 against Marumo Gallants in the league this past weekend. The Citizens are winless in their last nine league matches after last tasting a victory against Richards Bay FC on the 17th of January 2025.

Since the arrival of Ertugral three months ago, CT City have won three games, drew three and lost eight times across all competitions.

The former Kaizer Chiefs tactician was brought on board to change the club’s fortunes after a disastrous start to the current campaign. However, he was unsuccessful. Ertugral replaced Eric Tinkler, who was also fired in December 2024.

In a bid to end the season on a high, the Cape Town-based side has confirmed that Diogo Peral will lead the team going forward. According to the club, Peral will be assisted by Lebogang Manyama and Roger De Sa.

Peral and Manyama have been serving as the two assistants at City, while Roger De Sa has been unattached since his last stint with the Qatar national team in 2023.

“First team coach Diogo Peral will lead the team until the end of the season, assisted by Lebogang Manyama and Roger De Sa,” reads the statement by Cape Town City.

The John Comitis-owned team will be looking to climb up the table under the new coaches. They are sitting 13th on the log standings with 23 points after winning six league games, drawing five and losing 12 times.

After the FIFA break, Cape Town City will be eager to turn the corner when they face SuperSport United in the Premiership on the 30th of March in Polokwane.
