Mahlatse Makudubela discusses challenges he has faced in DRC

SA winger Mahlatse Makudubela has spoken about the challenges he has faced since he arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC], where he signed for AS Vita Club.

The 35-year-old joined AS Vita in January 2025 after cutting ties with the Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC. He was the first SA player to play in the Tanzanian elite league.

During his stint with Yanga SC, Makudubela won the prestigious NBC Premier League title and the FA Cup. They also advanced to the CAF Champions League quarterfinals under Miguel Gamondi’s guidance

The former Marumo Gallants and Mamelodi Sundowns winger signed for the Congolese powerhouse on an eight-month contract with a one-year option.

‘Skudu’, as he is popularly known within the football circles, is determined to help AS Vita challenge for the league title, as they are currently placed fourth in the Linafoot Group B with 24 points after 16 matches.

MAHLATSE MAKUDUBELA SINGLES OUT CHALLENGES HE HAS FACED IN DRC

The player observed a noticeable lack of professionalism and infrastructure shortcomings, highlighting a stark contrast between the stadium facilities in Congo and those in South Africa.

“The league this side is very physical, more than just tactical and technical. The issue of infrastructure, the standards of the stadiums’ infrastructure are not as good as the South African ones,” Makudubela told FARPost.

“The level of organisation, just for lack of a better word, professionalism, sometimes you have to be on your toes because at any time you can be told that the game is no longer played at 15:00, but it will be played at 18:00.

“So, you have to adjust and always be ready. For me, it’s another experience that I have to get used to. So, those are some of the challenges that we do face this side, but we learn along the way.”
