Kruger United star reveals Betway Premiership dream to Maswanganyi
Kruger United star Nkosinathi Ononogbu has shared his Betway Premiership dream with Orlando Pirates star Patrick Maswanganyi, his friend from their shared Tembisa background.
Ononogbu’s team, based in Mpumalanga, have emerged as title contenders in the Motsepe Foundation Championship with their sights set firmly on gaining promotion to the SA elite league.
After a good run of form, Â Kruger United moved to the second spot on the league table. They defeated Upington City FC 2-0 at KaNyamazane Stadium this past weekend to jump to 36 points after 22 games.
In their debut season in the second tier, following promotion from the ABC Motsepe League, Kruger achieved a record of 10 wins, six draws, and six losses.
As the title race is heating up, they are six points behind Durban City FC, who are occupying the top position with 42 points.
Meanwhile, Kruger are level on 36 points with Orbit College, JDR Stars, and Casric Stars, who are all fighting for automatic promotion to the elite league.
The team that tops the table at the end of the campaign will gain automatic promotion to the Premiership, while the second and third-placed teams will play in the PSL Promotional/Relegation playoffs alongside the club that finishes 15th in the top flight.
MASWANGANYI HEARS NKOSINATHI ONONOGBU’S BETWAY PREMIERSHIP ASPIRATIONS WITH KRUGER UNITED
During a casual Instagram Live call with Maswangany, who is a Bafana Bafana international, Ononogbu disclosed Kruger’s strong desire to win their upcoming matches and pursue promotion.
“We want to be promoted because we are number two on the log now. Durban City used to lead us with 14 points, but we have won four games in a row [to close the gap],” Ononogbu said.
“If we can win our next game in Cape Town [against Cape Town Spurs] and win against Milford FC, we are good.”
Interestingly, ‘Tito’ who hails from Tembisa with Ononogbu, is also in the midst of a fierce title contest between his team and Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Buccaneers boosted their title ambitions with a 2-1 victory over Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Pirates closed the point gap from the leaders – the Brazilians to 15 points with four games in hand.
Sundowns are sitting at the top of the table with 58 points in 23 matches, while Pirates are second with 43 points in 19 games. If the Soweto giants win all their games in hand, they will only be three points behind Sundowns.
