Zeca Marques resigning 44 days after joining Leopards

Just 44 days after joining Black Leopards, former Moroka Swallows FC coach Zeca Marques is on his way out of the club.

Marques was appointed as the Motsepe Foundation Championship side’s coach early last month as a replacement for Ghanaian mentor Maxwell Konadu.

Konadu, who is a former Black Stars of Ghana assistant coach, severed ties with the former topflight side less than a year after his appointment. He had joined the Leopards in July 2024 on a three-year deal from Ghana Premier League outfit Nsoatreman FC.

The Porto-born mentor, Marques, came along with Joel Masutha as his assistant. Under their tutelage, Lidoda Duvha won two matches, drew twice and lost once. After that run of results, where the team scored nine goals and conceded five, management decided to reshuffle the technical team.

Marques faced demotion from head coach to assistant coach, with Masutha set to take over as head coach and Abel Makhubela the second assistant coach.

WHO COULD TAKE OVER FROM MARQUES AT BLACK LEOPARDS?

The 2012 MTN8 winner with Swallows, however, informed the club that he would rather leave. Given the circumstances, Masutha is poised to take over moving forward.

Leopards are not far off from securing a play-off spot. They are currently in seventh position, with 31 points from 22 games. They trail second-placed Kruger United and Orbit College, third, by five points with eight games remaining.

Masutha, who has previously been at the helm of Leopards, looks set to guide them against Baroka in their next match. The two Limpopo clubs clash immediately after the international break on 29 March at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

Thereafter, they play Venda at home before visiting title contenders Kruger United in Nelspruit at the beginning of April.
