SuperSport United part ways with Gavin Hunt
SuperSport United have parted ways with veteran coach Gavin Hunt after a run of disappointing results in the Betway Premiership, FARPost has been informed.
Uncharacteristically, Matsatsantsa currently sits in 15th place on the log standings, with only nine matches remaining in the season.
They have struggled in the domestic league and are in the relegation zone for the first time in as many years.
After a Thursday board meeting, the club reportedly concluded that retaining Hunt would not improve their performance. The experienced mentor managed only three wins in 2025. Since the start of the year, they have played 13 matches across all competitions.
As earlier reported by Sunday World, a board meeting was held on Thursday to discuss the coach’s future, leading to the decision to relieve him of his responsibilities effective immediately.
Upon returning from the FIFA break, the team will be under new leadership. Interestingly, their next match will be against Cape Town City FC, another team facing challenges this season.
Cape Town City also parted ways with their coach, Muhsin Ertugral, last week. The veteran mentor took over from Eric Tinkler in December. Ertugral’s departure followed a dismal 10-match winless streak in the Betway Premiership and an early exit from the Nedbank Cup in the Round of 32.
Assistant coach Diogo Peral has been appointed to lead the team for the remainder of the season. The new head coach will be assisted by Lebogang Manyama and Roger De Sa.
WHO COULD TAKE OVER FROM GAVIN HUNT AT SUPERSPORT?
Hunt, who previously guided SuperSport to three consecutive league titles from 2008 to 2010, returned to the club in July 2022. He clinched his fourth title with the now-defunct Bidvest Wits.
It is likely that Andre Arendse will manage the remaining nine matches to help SuperSport escape the relegation zone.
In the other remaining fixtures, Matsatsantsa will face Marumo Gallants, Orlando Pirates, Polokwane City FC, Chippa United and Stellenbosch FC. Richards Bay will be their last opponent.
