The text message from Rele Mofokeng that gave Williams ‘goosebumps’
Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has disclosed a moving moment involving a message from young talent Relebohile Mofokeng, stating that the text gave him “goosebumps”.
Williams revealed that he was moved by the message of support from Mofokeng, which was sent ahead of the top-of-the-table clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates last Sunday at FNB Stadium in Soweto.
Williams was out of action for over a month due to an injury but was between the sticks as Pirates beat Sundows 2-1 in the Betway Premiership tie. Mofokeng scored a quickfire brace on the day, with Khuliso Mudau netting the goal for Sundowns in a game that was entertaining.
He returned to action during a Betway Premiership clash against AmaZulu FC a few days before the big clash against Pirates. Williams will lead Bafana Bafana when they face Lesotho in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Bafana have been in camp at the Ranch outside Polokwane since Monday as they prepare for the Lesotho encounter.
WHAT RELEBOHILE MOFOKENG SAID TO RONWEN WILLIAMS WHEN THE GOALIE WAS OUT INJURED
“You know, just receiving a message from Rele Mofokeng of all people. Messaging me two weeks ago and saying: Skipper, what’s going on?; It just made me feel so happy,” said Williams.
“I got goosebumps when I saw him sending me that message. Yet we were going to come up against each other in a week’s time, so it did me wonders, honestly speaking.
“It has refreshed me and given me time to sit back and just watch the game. Hopefully, I will be re-energised for this business end that’s coming in now for club and country. I am excited and looking forward to the big games coming up.”
